Introduction

Efi Cruise is redefining Afro-fusion with his distinctive “Southern Afro-Jazz” sound — a refreshing mix of jazz, Afrobeats, highlife, hip-hop, and funk. Born Efiom Ita in Lagos and raised in Calabar, this gifted Nigerian artist has been captivating music lovers since his 2017 debut, blending rich storytelling with rhythmic depth and emotional honesty.

Early Life and Musical Journey

Growing up in Lagos, Efi Cruise’s musical roots run deep. As a child, he was trained to play the piano and could interpret classical manuscripts before his teenage years. Though boarding school briefly interrupted his early training, he continued to nurture his passion as a member of the Kings College Lagos boys’ choir.

His journey later took him to Devon, South West England, where he earned a degree in Business and Logistics from the University of Plymouth (2014–2018). Yet, despite the security of his academic path, Efi’s heart remained anchored in music. After graduation, he returned to Nigeria — against family expectations — to follow his calling.

A Life-Changing Experience

In 2010, life took a dramatic turn. On his way to collect his University of Lagos admission letter, Efi was involved in a devastating motorcycle accident, leading to the amputation of his lower right limb. This pivotal event reshaped his worldview.

During his rehabilitation in Houston, Texas, music became a vital form of therapy. “It was my escape and my healing,” he recalls. Those challenging years between 2010 and 2014 refined his perspective and deepened his emotional connection to his art.

Musical Influences

Efi Cruise’s artistry draws inspiration from both global and local icons — Wyclef Jean, Tom Misch, Kenny Rogers, Fela Kuti, Jamie Foxx, Sade Adu, and Lionel Richie. These influences shape his versatile sound, which effortlessly crosses genres and emotions.

The Story Behind “Soul”

His latest single, “Soul,” embodies introspection and authenticity. The song combines smooth R&B grooves with the grit of hip-hop and the warmth of jazz. Built around a pulsing bassline — which cleverly samples the opening bars of Bob Marley’s “I Shot the Sheriff” — “Soul” is a meditation on resilience, identity, and purpose.

“This song is about getting back to the essence — the why,” Efi explains. “It’s for anyone trying to stay grounded while chasing growth.”

With heartfelt lyrics and textured melodies, “Soul” continues his tradition of merging substance with style — music that feels timeless yet current.

The Lagos Influence

Living and creating in Lagos, Efi finds balance amid chaos. “The city is fast-paced,” he says, “but I try to find the beauty in the madness — the quiet in the noise.” This contrast fuels his music and lyrics, giving them both urgency and calm.

Artistry and Style

Efi Cruise’s performances feature his signature scat-singing technique — inspired by jazz legends Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong. His delivery dances between Afrobeat, reggae, R&B, and hip-hop, with effortless rhythm and improvisation. “I float on the bar like it’s nothing,” he laughs, “but it’s everything.”

Personality and Vision

Though humble, Efi’s humour shines through his interviews. Asked what makes him unique, he quips, “All of them!” His music invites listeners to interpret freely — “whatever you feel is true.”

As for challenges? “From my perspective, there are none,” he insists — a testament to his unshakable mindset.

In the coming years, he envisions himself “playing music to interesting people in interesting places.” His dream collaborations include Tom Misch and Lauryn Hill.

For newcomers, Efi recommends starting with “Flex.” “That was my state of mind when I decided to chase music seriously,” he explains — a bold, liberating anthem for self-belief and transformation.
