Making Jump To Our Beats LagosJump Radio
Mr Eazi isn’t just a talented singer and songwriter, he’s a musical innovator. This Nigerian artist practically invented Banku music, a captivating blend of Ghanaian highlife and Nigerian rhythms. But Mr Eazi’s influence extends far beyond genre creation. Let’s dive into the world of this international music star.
Born in Port Harcourt, Nigeria, Mr Eazi (real name Oluwatosin Oluwole Ajibade) grew up in an entrepreneurial household. His father, a pilot, even established his own aviation consulting business. While attending primary school, Mr Eazi had a brief stint in the school choir. Music continued to be a passion, and at 16, he relocated to Ghana to pursue a degree in mechanical engineering. It was during this time that Mr Eazi began recording music and experimenting with different sounds.
While at university, Mr Eazi started a party and promotion company. This experience exposed him to the vibrant music scene in Ghana. He also began recording guest vocals on tracks, and his unique style – a blend of Ghanaian pidgin English lyrics and Nigerian melodies – quickly gained attention. This fusion of sounds became known as Banku music.
Mr Eazi’s career took a major leap forward with the release of the song “Skin Tight” in 2015. This dancehall-influenced track, featuring Ghanaian singer Efya, became a global hit. Mr Eazi went on to collaborate with other established artists, including Wizkid and Tekno, further solidifying his place in the Afrobeats scene.
Mr Eazi is a multi-faceted artist with a passion for giving back. In 2019, he launched emPawa Africa, a talent incubation initiative designed to support up-and-coming African artists. This program provides grants and mentorship to help young musicians develop their careers.
From his innovative Banku music to his commitment to nurturing new talent, Mr Eazi is a force to be reckoned with. He’s not just a successful musician; he’s a cultural ambassador who continues to push the boundaries of Afrobeats and inspire artists worldwide.
