Olufela Olufemi Anikulapo Kuti popularly known as Femi Kuti, he is the eldest son of the Afro-beat legend Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, Femi Kuti is a Nigerian musician born in London and raised in Lagos. He spent many years playing in his father’s band before eventually rising to super stardom following his father’s death in the late ’90s.
Femi Kuti borrowed the best elements from his father’s powerful prototype such as funky and jazzy, this version of Afro-beat is the most exciting new sound to emerge from Nigeria for years.
Femi had formed his own young band, The Positive Force, and released their debut album for Polygram Nigeria. Entitled No Cause for Alarm, the album was a raw but impressive mixture of funky soul-jazz, with a sharp social comment. Strong interest in this album prompted a dramatic debut appearance in Paris, where Femi’s no-holds-barred show devastated a huge audience.
In 2004 he opened his club the new afrika shrine, where he recorded the live album Africa Shrine. After a 4-year absence due to personal reasons, he re-emerged in 2008 with Day by Day and Africa for Africa in 2010, for which he was nominated twice for Grammy Award. He was both inducted into the Headies Hall of Fame in 2012(the most prestigious music awards in Nigeria).
Femi Kuti has already released his tenth album titled One People One World, On May 2017 he also broke the Guinness world record for a single held note on a saxophone — 51 minutes and 35 seconds.
