Making Jump To Our Beats LagosJump Radio
Every now and then, a voice emerges that feels both familiar and otherworldly—grounded in truth yet elevated by art. Raekam, the Nigerian singer-songwriter from Kaduna, represents that rare balance. Her sound fuses soul, art, and self-truth, and her latest single Alchem captures the essence of transformation — pain refined into power.
For LagosJump Radio UK, Raekam embodies what the next generation of Afrofusion artists stands for: authenticity, healing, and fearlessness.

“My name is Raekam,” she begins softly, “a Nigerian singer, songwriter and performer whose music fuses soul, art, and self-truth. Alchem is more than a song — it’s transformation.”
Raised in Kaduna and now based in Lagos, she arrived in the city in 2021, chasing growth and creative freedom. “Coming to Lagos was about self-growth for me before anything else. The culture and exposure here shaped me into who I am today. Lagos is magical.”
Raekam describes music as her compass and therapy: “The only way I understand my feelings is through creating music. My only aspiration is to share my gift so I can have a peaceful death.”
When asked why she chose music as a career, her answer is simple and direct: “Because it’s the only thing I enjoy.”
Her sound carries influences from both Nigerian and global icons:
Each influence is audible in her style — a blend of soul, honesty, and layered emotion that feels both modern and timeless.
Her latest single, Alchem, is a stunning debut statement. “Alchem means turning pain into gold — strength, courage, and power,” she explains. “I wrote Alchem while in a toxic relationship. I recorded it after we broke up, hoping it would help me heal. But I realised healing is a process — it took time. When it was finally complete, I knew I was ready to release it.”
The song blends soulful vocals, emotional storytelling, and purpose-driven artistry. It isn’t just about heartbreak; it’s about transformation. Each lyric unfolds like a confession, while the production gives space for her voice to shine — fragile yet fierce.
It’s music as catharsis. “Alchem represents that moment when you realise pain isn’t the end — it’s the beginning of something beautiful.”
For Raekam, Lagos is more than a city — it’s an ecosystem of energy, inspiration, and contrast. “The culture, the exposure, the chaos… it all shaped me. Lagos has a rhythm that forces you to grow. It’s where I learned discipline, resilience, and artistic confidence.”
This environment pushed her to experiment sonically, combining Afrobeats rhythms with alternative soul textures. Her voice sits at the intersection of vulnerability and strength — two qualities Lagos rewards in those who dare to dream.
“The Nigerian music scene is evolving so fast,” she says with a smile. “I’m impressed and excited. There’s so much more coming.”
Raekam believes the growth of Afrobeats, Amapiano, and Afro-fusion represents the freedom young African artists now have to express every facet of themselves. “We don’t need to sound foreign anymore to belong. Anyone can win if the music is real.”
When asked what makes her music stand out, she pauses before answering:
“I perform to leave people with an atmosphere of peace and authenticity. I want my sound to feel like art — honest, healing, and intentional.”
That philosophy extends to her process. “I write all my songs. Sometimes I start with lyrics, other days it’s melody first. Either way, I always follow emotion.”
Her dedication shows. “My music has evolved so much since I started. Rehearsal and work ethic play a huge role in self-development. It’s how I’ve learned to refine my sound.”
Like many emerging artists, Raekam’s journey hasn’t been without hurdles. “The hardest part is learning to do it for myself first before anything else. The trends are tempting — everyone wants to go viral — but I’ve learned that I can’t create for trends. I have to create for truth.”
The industry has also taught her essential survival skills: “Nobody does anything for free. Always communicate clearly, and set boundaries politely before working with anyone. It’s about respect.”
Raekam’s goal is deeply personal: “I hope my music heals and transforms people — helps them become the best version of themselves.”
Her songs carry messages of self-love, resilience, and freedom. “Always put yourself first,” she advises. “Be yourself even if no one accepts it.”
That message resonates beyond Nigeria, especially across the diaspora, where her songs are beginning to attract growing attention for their emotional honesty.
As she looks ahead, Raekam has big dreams: “I’d love to work with Kendrick Lamar, Tems, Asa, and Beyoncé.”
She’s currently in the studio, crafting what she calls “a juicy hot jam” for release next month. “It’s different from Alchem, but it’s still me — soulful, calm, romantic, and empowering. My fans find my music mysterious, and yeah, I’m the mystery girl unravelling through sound.”
When she’s not recording or writing, Raekam enjoys photography and swimming — both reflective, meditative hobbies that complement her artistic temperament.
“I love capturing still moments. Photography helps me see beauty in everyday life, just like music does.”
Looking ahead five years, she envisions herself not just as a performer but as a creator in the full sense. “I see myself producing my own music, crafting my own sound, and exploring instruments. I want to go deeper into production.”
With her lyrical depth, artistic vision, and commitment to authenticity, it’s clear that Raekam represents a new chapter for Nigerian soul and Afrofusion — a generation redefining vulnerability as strength.
If you’re discovering Raekam for the first time, she recommends starting with Alchem.
“It’s calm, romantic, and empowering,” she says. “It’s the truest reflection of who I am.”
