Making Jump To Our Beats LagosJump Radio

In a world where music evolves by the day, some movements remind us of where it all began — the cipher, the microphone, the truth. Lyricist Lounge Nigeria is one of those movements.

Born from the legendary Lyricist Lounge brand founded in 1991 by Anthony Marshall and Danny Castro in Brooklyn, New York, the Nigeria chapter bridges global Hip-Hop heritage with African creativity. What began as a platform for freestyle sessions and underground showcases in New York has now found a powerful home in Nigeria — a continent where rhythm and storytelling have always intertwined.
The Lyricist Lounge concept was built on one thing — giving rappers a stage when the world wasn’t watching yet. The early 1990s Brooklyn scene birthed legends through this format: raw MCs, DJs, producers, and poets who used words as both weapon and art.
Three decades later, that same DNA travelled across the Atlantic. In December 2019, a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) officially made Lyricist Lounge Nigeria a reality. The agreement was signed between Anthony Marshall, the co-founder of the original brand, and Bionic Mbah, the founder of Rap Radio Africa.
That signature wasn’t just ink on paper — it was a declaration: Hip-Hop’s future in Africa would carry the same grassroots energy that defined its birth in Brooklyn.
To understand Lyricist Lounge Nigeria, you have to know Bionic Mbah — the man behind the mic and the mission.
Long before streaming and social media took hold, Bionic launched Rap Radio Africa as a radio show on Coal City FM, Enugu, in 2002. His goal was simple: to give Nigeria’s underground rappers the same visibility Afrobeats and pop acts enjoyed on air.
“I saw too many lyricists with insane talent who weren’t getting radio love,” Bionic explains. “So I built a platform to change that.”
In 2016, Rap Radio Africa evolved into an online radio station, expanding its reach beyond Nigeria to spotlight rising Hip-Hop voices across Africa. Through his shows — The Rap Radio Africa Show (co-hosted by Smith Ukpong Smith) and his interview-led podcast, The Bionic Show — Bionic created space for artists to speak their truth, promote their craft, and debate the issues shaping African Hip-Hop.
But the movement didn’t stop with music. Recognising that Hip-Hop is also about dialogue, Bionic and Smith launched Hiphop Chronicles — a talk show dedicated to unpacking the culture’s deeper issues: industry gatekeeping, lack of infrastructure, creative ownership, and the eternal tension between commercial success and lyrical integrity.
Through these conversations, the team inspired collaboration, mentorship, and unity across regions. The result was more than radio — it became a community for MCs, producers, DJs, and fans who believe in Hip-Hop as a form of education and empowerment.
In line with the original Brooklyn blueprint, Lyricist Lounge Nigeria began hosting a monthly Hip-Hop showcase every last Thursday. The mission: to shine light on new, underground, unsigned, and independent artists from across the country.
These nights became more than performance slots; they became initiation ceremonies. Every emcee had to bring real bars — no autotune, no gimmicks. The energy was raw, and the audience was there for one thing only: authentic Hip-Hop.
Over time, the showcases started drawing rappers from every zone of Nigeria, building bridges between cities and generations — from Abuja to Lagos, from Enugu to Jos.
Fast forward to October 25, 2025 — the movement’s vision now has a sound.
At midnight, Lyricist Lounge Nigeria Vol. 1 officially dropped.

The project celebrates 19 Hip-Hop artists and 4 producers, blending lyricism, storytelling, and classic beat craftsmanship. The album also features two of Nigeria’s Hip-Hop pioneers — Modenine and Pherowshuz — both respected for their technical prowess and contribution to the genre’s growth in Nigeria.
Each track captures the evolution of Nigerian Hip-Hop: the grit, the humor, the resilience, and the pride of a culture still hungry for respect.
From battle verses to introspective reflections, Vol. 1 feels like a time capsule — both a tribute and a statement. It announces that Hip-Hop in Nigeria is not just alive but thriving on its own terms.
Lyricist Lounge Nigeria’s debut album embodies the idea that Hip-Hop can evolve without compromise. It pays homage to its origins while amplifying the diversity of today’s African rap scene.
This is what Bionic Mbah envisioned — a pan-African platform where skill meets purpose, and lyricists don’t need permission to be heard. The project’s lineup proves it: young spitters stand alongside veterans, each contributing their distinct regional flavour and perspective.
From conscious rap to party flows, the soundscape is unified by one thing — bars that matter.
